The New England Patriots were looking to get to the Super Bowl with a win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Patriots were without WR Chad Ochocinco who was inactive after attending his father’s funeral in Florida yesterday. This was a game the Patriots wanted and they came out wanting to prove that.
In the first quarter the Patriots started the scoring on a Stephan Gostkowski 29 yard field goal. That was answered with a Ravens field goal to tie the game in the second quarter. But BenJarvus Green-Ellis broke the tie with a 7 yard touchdown run giving the Patriots a 10-3 lead. But the defense for the Patriots would allow the Ravens to get a touchdown to tie the game. The defense for the Patriots early on played well, but once the Ravens were able to get the field goal it took their momentum away. The Patriots did go into halftime with a 13-10 lead.
The Patriots came out in the second half moving the ball down the field and capped off a 14 play drive with a field goal by Stephan Gostkowski. But quickly the game turned in favor of the Ravens as they scored ten unanswered points to take a 20-16 lead. And it looked as if the Patriots were going to lose this game. But Tom Brady drove the ball down the and scored a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak. The Patriots took the lead 23-20 in the fourth quarter.
The Ravens were driving the ball, but Brandon Spikes intercepted Joe Flacco and the Patriots got the ball back. But Tom Brady failed to capitalize on the opportunity and threw his 2nd interception of the day. The Ravens looked to get a first down on a fourth and long but the Patriots defense was able to force and incomplete pass from Joe Flacco and the Patriots took over on downs. Vince Wilfork pressured Flacco into throwing the ball early after he was able to get a hand on Flacco’s jersey. That was an aggressive move by the Ravens and it didn’t pay off.
The Patriots received the ball with 2:46 left on the clock looking to run it out and win the game. But they were forced to punt after they were unable to convert on a 3rd and 5.
The Ravens drove the ball all the way down the field and tried for a field goal that was missed. The Patriots won the game 23-20 on a missed field goal that would have sent the game into overtime.
The Patriots will now be headed to Indianapolis to face the New York Giants or the San Francisco 49ers.
