Mets lose Spring Training opener 3-1

The New York Mets played their first game of Spring Training tonight against the Washington Nationals. The night started with a quick score from the Mets new acquisition in Andres Torres. The new center fielder singled and stole a base, before Daniel Murphy bough him home with an RBI single. But the Mets would relinquish the lead in the next inning as Dillon Gee gave up a solo homerun to Rick Ankiel. Gee went 2.0 innings allowing two hits on one run. Gee also struck out a batter and walked a batter in his brief time on the mound. Gee had a overall successful start today and looked under control for the most part.

The Mets had a couple of notable pitchers on the mound tonight. Matt Harvey came to the mound after Gee’s two innings of work. Harvey looked good, but struggled in his second inning to command the strike zone. Harvey’s final line was 2.0 innings giving up zero hits, but walked three batters. Harvey seemed under control emotionally after issuing the walks. The Mets have to be happy with the effort Harvey had tonight. Frank Francisco was the other notable pitcher the Mets had on the mound tonight. Francisco gave up a run in his inning of work. He will be the closer for the Mets this season and his spring will be very important. Both Harvey and Francisco struggled at times, but both were able to get through their innings.

The Mets trailed from the fifth inning on tonight and had opportunities to score, but never were able to get a run across. The Mets Miguel Batista pitched two innings allowing one unearned run while giving up a two hits and a walk. Batista struck out two batters in his night’s work.

In the bottom of the 9th inning the Mets were retired easily as they fell to the Nationals 3-1 in their spring training opener. The Mets will play tomorrow afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals live at 1:10 PM.
