The New York Mets played their ninth game of the spring as they took on the St. Louis Cardinals. Before the game the Mets scratched Ruben Tejada from the lineup because of a left groin strain suffered in practice.
Mike Pelfrey took the mound looking to have a strong outing after his rough first start. But quickly Pelfrey fell behind hitters and served up a two run homerun to David Freese. His sinker was all over the strike zone and often times fell right into the middle of the plate. In the next inning Pelfrey served up a solo homerun to Yadier Molina that extended the Cardinal lead to 3-0. Pelfrey went 4.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits. He continues to have a rough spring, but there is plenty of time for him to get better.
The Mets were able to squeak out a run on a Lucas Duda sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Mets had the bases loaded in that inning with no outs, but were able to score just the one run. That would be the only run the Mets were able to score this game.
Ramon Ramirez had a tough inning as he allowed two runs on three hits. Also, Frank Francisco went an inning allowing a run on two hits. Both players were acquired this offseason and are viewed as key members of the bullpen.
The Mets went on to lose 7-1 as their offense was held in check today. The Mets will play the Detroit Tigers tomorrow which will be televised on ESPN.
