The New York Mets looked to make it four straight wins tonight as they faced the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.
Mike Pelfrey took the mound for the Mets tonight looking to start the season off right. But quickly Pelfrey struggled to command the strike zone and fell behind hitters which led to three runs by the Nationals thru the first three innings. Pelfrey was not strong early on, but was able to settle down towards the end of his outing. Tonight Pelfrey went 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 10 hits. The good thing Pelfrey can take away from tonight’s outing was that he was able to strikeout 8 batters in tonight’s game. Tonight started very shaky for Pelfrey, but he was able to get through the outing without really hurting his team. The Mets have to be satisfied with what Pelfrey did tonight, even though he wasn’t sharp. Pelfrey has to continue to get better and start limiting hits. Tonight he gave up 10 hits which is really bad. Somehow he was able to walk away with a no decision.
The offense for the Mets came alive in the 3rd and 4th inning as they scored a combined three runs to tie the game. David Wright knocked in the first run, on his RBI single in the 3rd inning. Then in the 4th inning newly called up CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis knocked in two runs on his first homerun of his major league career. Nieuwenhuis looked solid in that a bat in which he was unable to hit some very good sliders. But Edwin Jackson threw another slider that didn’t move and Nieuwenhuis made him pay.
This game was tied all the way through the ninth inning before Daniel Murphy won the game on a walk-off single. He made the best play of the game at second base to get the Mets out of the top of the ninth inning. Tonight this was the best the Mets played, simply because they were able to grind this game out and get the win. The Mets are now 4-0 for the first time since 2007 and everything is going their way. The Mets will play the Nationals again tomorrow night at 7:10 PM.
