Mets defeat Phillies 5-2

The New York Mets won their first road game of the season as they beat the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets really came out early looking get this game over with. Daniel Murphy knocked in the first run with his RBI double. Then after two outs Jason Bay delivered his first homerun of the season which gave the Knicks a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Those runs really gave the Mets the lift they needed early on. They would lead the entire game and never really faced any real trouble. After the Phillies scored a run the Mets would get a run in the fifth inning on Scott Hairston’s solo homerun. Tonight the Mets had some power in their bats that really supplied them with the win.

R.A. Dickey really had his pitching going tonight. Dickey went seven strong innings allowing one run on 9 hits. He didn’t allow the Phillies to cluster together hits which really gave him a chance to get a win. Dickey would get the win, but more importantly got his 14th consecutive quality start, which leads the majors. This performance today also saw Dickey strikeout 7 batters. As the number two starter Dickey has to pitch well this season and so far he has done that. Tonight was a performance Dickey could build upon. Starts like these makes Dickey a very valuable pitcher for the Mets.

The Mets played a very smart game on both sides of the field. They added another run in the ninth inning on a Lucas Duda sacrifice fly. This gave the Mets a 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth where Frank Francisco looked to finish out the game. Francisco allowed just a hit in the inning and closed out the game for the Mets. The Mets did give up an unearned run on a Daniel Murphy error. This was a win the Mets wanted to start their road trip out well. The most important thing was the Mets were able to get runs early that helped take the pressure off of their pitcher. The next game will be tomorrow as the Mets look to continue their very nice start.
