The New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies today to earn the series win. This was a nice win for the Mets who won their first rubber game of the season. This was a very eventful game for both teams. The Mets came out getting runs early and at one point went up by 4 runs. But they would give up a grand slam in the 8th inning that tied the game. After both teams scored in the 10th inning, the Mets were finally able to get a run that the Rockies couldn’t get and were able to win the game.
Johan Santana had a very great outing today. Santana pitched six strong innings allowing just two hits. He really had his pitches working today and at one point looked unhittable. With five strikeouts and three walks, Santana possibly pitched his best road game of the season. This performance today deserved a win, but somehow the Mets fell apart, but were still able to pull out the win. Santana is showing signs of his old self and today he proved that he is close to his old form.
The Mets offense was really good today as they were able to put 6 runs on the board. David Wright went 2 for 3 with 3 walks and 2 RBI’s. Wright was locked in at the plate tonight and because of that he never really had pitches to hit. He is playing really well right now and is continuing to lead the Mets on both sides of the field. Not only was Wright good, but Josh Thole connected for his first homerun in the 5th inning of the game. Thole caught a pitch and drove it over the right field wall. Thole is in no means a power hitter, but today he really put a charge into that hit.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3 for 6 with a RBI in today’s game. Nieuwenhuis continues to impress and his stay will be permanent if he can continue to find success. He really hit the ball well today and as the leadoff hitter he has to continue to get on base. Ike Davis finally had a great game hitting. Davis went 3 for 6 with the game winning RBI in the 11th inning. This was a nice performance by Davis and he finally showed signs that he may be out of his slump. He also had a hit taken away on a nice defensive play by the Rockies 2B Marco Scutaro.
This was a nice win for the Mets and today they proved that at least for the moment, they can win on the road. Frank Francisco got the win after blowing his first save of the season. And Ramon Ramirez received his first save of the season and his first as a Met. The Mets won this game in 11 innings in a game that took a little over 4 hours.
