The New York Mets faced the San Francisco Giants tonight at Citi Field. The Mets were looking to snap a two game losing streak with a win tonight. The Mets sent Jon Niese to the mound hoping that he could get his third win of the season. In his 6.0 innings of work tonight Niese allowed three runs and a homerun. He was able to limit the score from getting out of reach and kept the Mets in the game. The Mets have to be happy with what Niese was able to do tonight. He was able to fight through early control issues and was able to give them six innings. As the season goes on it is very important that Niese continues to grow as a major league pitcher. So far this season Niese seems to be doing just that. The Mets were able to get Niese off the hook in this game after they tied the game up in the ninth inning.
The Mets offense had the long ball going early in this game as Jason Bay and Kirk Nieuwenhuis both clubbed solo homeruns. Each of those homeruns came and inning a part. Nieuwenhuis had a great game tonight as he was able to make some very nice defensive plays. It will be very interesting to see if Nieuwenhuis will stay with the ball club, but after tonight’s performance he might just be with the team a little longer.
The key moment in this game was when Josh Thole tied the game up in the ninth inning on a RBI single. The Mets were finally able to score after having numerous opportunities to score. The game would go into the 10th inning marking the first time all season the Mets would play in extra innings. In the top half of the inning Kirk Nieuwenhuis made an error that cost the Mets a chance to win the game. But in the bottom half of the inning the Mets were able to get two runners on, but were unable to get any runs after Bay struck out and Lucas Duda flied out.
