The New York Mets took on the Washington Nationals today at Citi Field. This game was very tight early on as Johan Santana and Stephen Strasburg dueled. Strasberg got the best of Santana today even though Santana allowed one run. This game was limited in offense as both teams struggled to drive in runs.
Johan Santana struggled early in his start, but was able to settle into a very nice groove to end his outing. Santana went 5.0 innings allowing one run on five hits. He also struck out 8 batters and walked three. He really dominated the National hitters once he was able to get into a nice rhythm. This game really was well pitched by Santana and can be another building block for him. He threw a season high 99 pitches today which is really good. The next step for Santana is to get back to commanding the strike zone on a consistent basis. Today he showed that he can be a very successful in getting guys to strikeout and hopefully he can continue to have success this season.
The Mets offense failed to get their ace any runs today and they continue to leave Santana out to dry with no run support. This game the Mets struck out 13 times and only had three hits in this game. They were able to get on base earlier in the season, but over the last two games they have struggled to generate runs. Today was an example of an unproductive offense that the Mets had last season. The Mets manager Terry Collins was ejected in the seventh inning after he had an argument with home plate umpire Larry Vanover. This was the first ejection of Collins this season.
This lost gives the Mets two consecutive losses and their first series lost. They will play the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night and they are hoping to somehow do well in that series.
