Mets shutout Phillies 5-0

The New York Mets took on the Philadelphia Phillies today at Citizens Bank Park. This was the second game of the three game series. After winning the first game yesterday night the Mets were looking to guarantee a series win with a win today. The Mets welcomed back David Wright and he played very good after missing three games with a fractured pinky. Wright started off with a first pitch homerun in the first inning that gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead. Wright showed no ill-effects of his time off, as he had three hits in his return. Wright hit the ball really hard every time he went to the plate.

The Mets offense took off early in this game and in the 4th inning the Mets added three more runs on two separate hits. The first run came when Jason Bay grounded out that scored the runner at third. Bay was not given an RBI because he grounded into a double play. Then the second and third runs came on a Lucas Duda two run homer. This was one of the best power hitting games for the Mets since their outburst earlier in the season. As the season goes on it is very important that the Mets have some type of power because it will make them very hard to pitch to. Today they showed that they could hit for power and score against a very tough pitching staff.

Jon Niese started for the Mets and he was very dominant early on. He was given the lead and never relinquished it. So far Niese has started this season out very good and today he had his best performance in two starts. Niese went 6.2 innings allowing no runs on five hits including five strikeouts. If he continues to pitch this way the Mets will have a nice season from Niese.

The Mets collected another run in the ninth inning as Ruben Tejada doubled home a run. The Mets took a 5-0 lead and were in position to get the win. Jon Rauch came in to close the door for the Mets and finish off the Mets second win in a row. He pitch the final inning allowing no hits and striking out one batter. The bullpen continues to pitch very good to start the season and seems to be very improved from last season.

This game ended with the Mets taking the win as they continue to have a very nice start to their season. The Mets will conclude their series with the Phillies tomorrow afternoon as they try to get the sweep.

David Wright
