The Mets took on the Marlins in the last game of a three game series this afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets started Jon Niese today and he pitched a very good game. Niese lasted 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. This was another nice outing from him. He also was able to strikeout 6 batters today. His approach this season has been very good as he continues to mature as a pitcher. Today Niese threw all of his pitches and was very dominant. His one major mistake cost him a chance at the win when he served up a solo homerun to Gabby Sanchez. This start today showed that if Niese gets run support he could win just about all of his starts. Today Niese walked away with the no decision, but pitched very good despite the Marlins getting two runs off of him.
The Mets started to scoring in this game when Ruben Tejada hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the first inning. The Mets went a while before having a chance to score again. But in the ninth inning the Mets looked to make a rally to win the game. David Wright led off the inning with a walk hoping to start something for the Mets. The next batter was Lucas Duda who would groundout to first which moved Wright to second base. Ike Davis came up after Duda and walked to put runners on second and first. With two men on Josh Thole would walk on a full count. Justin Turner came up looking to just to get a hit. Turner would work a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 2-2. That at-bat was very clutch for Turner who fought off plenty of pitches to work that walk. Scott Hairston came up, but grounded into a fielders choice that prevented the runner from scoring from third base. But Kirk Nieuwenhuis came up big with a clutch RBI single to win the game for the Mets.
The Mets were able to win this game despite falling behind. In all three games of the series the Mets were able to comeback in win. The swept the Marlins to earn their third straight win. This is excellent momentum to bring with the team going to Colorado tomorrow. What a win for this team continuing to make the best of every opportunity.
