The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in the very first game of the regular season. Johan Santana started for the Mets and he really was locked in toward the middle of the game. At one point Santana retired 12 straight batters before allowing a double and two walks. He was able to get a weak ground ball that ended the inning and prevented any runs to score. Santana went 5.0 innings allowing two hits and two walks. This was a very nice performance from Santana. Today proved that Santana will be very good this season, if he is able to stay healthy.
The Mets offense left 8 runners on base today. But David Wright was able to single home the winning and first run of the game in the sixth inning. Wright went 2 for 3 with two hits and a walk. He will have to continue to hit the ball well in order for the Mets offense to have success this season.
The Mets will face the Braves again on Saturday as R.A. Dickey takes the mound. Today the Mets won their first game and are hoping that this is the start of a good season.
