The New York Mets failed to get the win tonight after they led by four early in this game. This was a very disappointing game in that the ace of the team wasn’t able to hold the opposition off the scoring board. Johan Santana tonight was given four runs early in this game, but as the game wore on Santana allowed the Pirates back into the game. Santana went 6.1 innings tonight allowing four runs on eight hits. Tonight Santana was up in the strike zone and the Pirates took advantage of his mistakes. Not only did Santana have a poor outing, but the Mets defense really made some terrible mistakes. Mike Baxter made the biggest mistake tonight in the 8th inning as he got in the way of Kirk Nieuwenhuis. That resulted in an error that allowed Neil Walker to reach third base with no one out. Jon Rauch pitched that inning and served up a fly ball that would score Neil Walker. That run was the go ahead run that broke a 4-4 tie.
This was a very unpleasant start to a three game series by the Mets. They have to regroup and move on from this terrible loss. The offense started out good, but late in the game they were unable to generate more runs with the chance to do so. Tonight the Mets left nine men on base and went two for seven with runners in scoring position. This was a very tough loss as the Mets fall to the Pirates 5-4.
