Santana goes nine as Mets defeat Padres 9-0

The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres this afternoon in front of 28,745 fans. Today Johan Santana dominated the Padres. In his first complete game of the year Santana didn’t allow any runs and only gave up four hits. His pitches were electric today. Many of the Padres hitters struggled to make contact and that made today’s start that more special. Santana only needed 96 pitches to get the job done today. He also was able to get a first pitch in 22 of 30 at bats. This start today proved that Santana is starting to really feel good about himself. The Mets have to be excited about Santana heading into his next start. This performance today really has to give the team momentum heading into the next game.

It was a rare citing to see the Mets give Santana run support, but today Santana was given plenty of runs and never handed any of them back. The Mets started the scoring tonight as Scott Hairston hit a three-run homer to put the Mets up 3-0 in the second inning. Later in that inning Vinny Rottino hit a solo shot that put the Mets up another run. Those runs would stand for a while until Ike Davis had an RBI double in the 8th inning. The offense for the Mets really stepped up today and everyone was able to contribute in this win. And then to cap the day off, Mike Nickeas hit a grand slam that opened the game wide open as the Mets took a 9-0 lead. That homerun for Nickeas gave him only his second of his career and the first this season. This game really was nice by the Mets and they were finally able to support their ace. The Mets and Padres will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at Citi Field.
