Valdespin powers Mets past the Phillies; Win 5-2

The New York Mets started a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. This game was close throughout, but in the ninth inning Jordany Valdespin hit a three-run homerun to give the Mets a 5-2 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. That was the first major league hit for Valdespin in six plate appearances. That homerun would be the game winner for the Mets who really needed a nice win tonight.

Jon Niese started for the Mets and really struggled with the command of his curveball. Niese gave up two runs in five innings, but was able to keep his team in the game. Niese fought through this outing and was able to get out of trouble countless times tonight. Niese has struggled in two straight starts, but tonight put in the effort to keep his team in the game. Niese didn’t receive the win, but did an excellent job in not giving up tonight.

This Mets offense struggled early on, but in the 6th inning David Wright drove in two runs. That tied the game at 6 and the Mets were able to get Niese off the hook. This game really seemed like it would never end. After Manny Acosta, Bobby Parnell, and Tim Byrdak all pitched in this game the Mets were able to take the lead in the 9th inning. Frank Francisco came in and would shut the door to receive his 8th save of the season. The Mets won a very nice game tonight and now are three games over .500 and are continuing to win games. This performance tonight for this team was very impressive. Hopefully this can give the team some more momentum headed in tomorrows game.
