Mets lose heartbreaker; Fall to Nationals 7-6 in 12 innings

Tonight the New York Mets made some costly errors that led to their downfall in D.C. This game had plenty of offense from both teams, but the Nationals were able to score more runs and received the win. The Mets committed three errors tonight in big spots. Jordany Valdespin hit a solo homerun, but would make two critical errors in the same inning that would lead to the Nationals tying the game.

This performance by the Mets defense was pathetic. They have to come back tomorrow and play a much better defensive game, otherwise they will lose another game. The pitching was suspect at times in this game, but the defense really never supported them when they had opportunities to win the game. As this series continues the Mets have to get great starts from their starters. Tomorrow the pressure will be on Jeremy Hefner to get the job done.

Chris Young made his first start of the season tonight and really pitched well for his first outing. Young went five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He threw 75 pitches in this game and was able to get plenty of fly-ball outs. The Mets will now have to figure out which direction they will go in regards to Jon Rauch. Earlier in the day the Mets said that Rauch had debris in his throwing elbow and will miss the series. Tonight the Mets really missed having someone else in their bullpen. They will have to either place Rauch on the DL or just wait it out in hopes that Rauch can return by the end of the week.

Tonight the Mets couldn’t make plays to seal the win and that really came back to hurt them. The Mets lost tonight 7-6 in the 12th inning on a Bryce Harper walk-off single.
