Tonight the New York Mets and Washington Nationals will continue a three game series at Nationals Park. After a very tough loss last night, the Mets are looking to get the job done tonight. Their bullpen has been horrible in close games. More often than not the bullpen has underperformed this season. Yes, the case can be made that injuries have effected the team, but they still should have enough to perform well. Tonight the Mets offense will have to get a big lead. Close games put so much pressure on the Mets pitching and defense. Most close games the Mets are unable to get the job done simply because they seem to get rattled. This game can be a big game for the Mets simply because they would have an opportunity to get the series and stay close to the Nationals in the standings. A loss would give the Nationals the series and the chance to get the sweep tomorrow. This Mets team has fought for the entire season and tonight shouldn’t be any different.
Scott Hairston is arguably the hottest hitter for the Mets right now. His power has been on display as a pinch-hitter this season. Over the last seven games Hairston has five homeruns and 10 RBI’s over that stretch. His ability to get big hits for this team, continues to amaze. This season Hairston is healthy and seems to have accepted his role as a pinch-hitter. Not only has he played well in the pinch-hitter role, but when he starts he plays a solid game. Tonight Hairston will be coming off the bench and will likely see an at-bat in a big situation.
This game tonight has to have better defense from the Mets. Last night they had three errors that were in big spots. Omar Quintanilla and Jordany Valdespin both made errors that put the Mets in a bind. Valdespin had two errors in the same inning that resulted in a run scoring. Tonight Quintanilla will start, but he must get back to playing great defense. This game will come down to execution from the Mets pitching and defense, if both can play well then the Mets will likely win. Let’s go Mets
