The New York Mets lost tonight after having the lead in this game. The Mets trailed 1-0, but were able to comeback to take the lead on a Ronny Cedeno RBI double.
But the Giants would comeback in this game on some miscues by the Mets. After tying the game in the fifth inning, the Giants were able to take the lead after Ronny Cedeno botched a double play opportunity. That error would allow the Giants to score two runs in sixth inning.
This was a very tough lost for Jeremy Hefner who pitched a very solid game. Hefner has had some bad luck this season and tonight was another example. Hefner went 5.2 innings allowing four runs on ten hits. Hefner struck out five batters and walked three tonight.
The Mets made an amazing comeback tonight. Scott Hairston tied the game up on a two-run homerun. Following that huge hit, Justin Turner drove in Jason Bay to give the Mets the lead. The Mets would get another run on a Rob Johnson RBI single. After that inning the Mets led 6-4 and were looking to get their second win in a row.
Bobby Parnell came on for a save opportunity and would have a very tough time getting through tonight’s inning of work. After allowing two hits, Josh Edgin was called upon to try to capture his first major league save. Edgin would get no help as Ike Davis botched a ground ball that allowed the Giants to tie the game. Later in the inning Edgin would strikeout Marco Scutaro with the bases loaded to end the inning and send the Mets and Giants into extra innings.
In the tenth inning Scott Hairston would hit his second homer of the game. This homerun would give the Mets a 7-6 lead. Hairston has been the subject of trade rumors. With his performance tonight, he could have played his final game with the Mets. The Mets would tact on another run on a miscue by Clay Hensley who threw home to late on Rob Johnson bunt. That run was huge for the Mets who were trying to get some insurance to take into the bottom of the tenth.
Manny Acosta came in to try to get a save. Acosta would walk two batters and then record the second out of inning. But Acosta would allow a RBI single to Nate Schierholtz that would allow the Giants to creep a little bit closer.
Acosta would get the finally out and get the save despite a very tough inning. The mistake by Clay Hensley really loomed large in the end. The Mets won 8-7 giving them two straight wins.
WP: Josh Edgin (1-0)
LP: Santiago Casilla (4-5)
