Mets defeat Padres 6-2

Tonight the New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 6 to 2. This was a game in which the Mets led from the very start.

In the second inning the Mets were able to score four times. Two bases loaded walks and then a Jordany Valdespin two run double resulted in those four runs. That inning Edison Volquez really struggled for the Padres and that resulted in an early departure.

Jeremy Hefner started for the Mets biding for his second win of the season. Hefner would pitch a very solid game in which he would work six innings. Hefner allowed one run on five hits tonight while striking out two batters. This season Hefner has struggled, but his last two starts have really been much better. Hefner only needed 72 pitches tonight and really did a nice job in keeping the Padres hitters off balanced.

Two offensive stars tonight was Daniel Murphy who had four hits tonight including a double and a walk. And Mike Baxter who walked a career high five times tonight becoming the first Met to accomplish this feat in a nine inning game.

Bobby Parnell came into the ninth inning in a non-save opportunity, but he would struggle to record outs. Parnell served up a homerun to Chase Headley to start the inning. He would then give up a double and a walk. Parnell would leave with runners on second and first as Frank Francisco made his return from the disabled list. Francisco missed six weeks with an oblique injury. Francisco would induce a double play to end the game and earn his 19th save of the season.

The Mets offense was much better tonight and they really supported the young pitcher in Hefner. This series will conclude tomorrow afternoon as both teams look for the win.
