Mets defeat Phillies 9-5

The New York Mets clashed with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets were looking to continue their winning streak of two games against a Phillies team who has been winning games as of late.

Chris Young started for the Mets and would have a very rough outing. Young last 4.1 innings allowing five runs on four hits. Young served up a grand slam to Ryan Howard and a solo homerun from Chase Utley. The long ball really cut Young’s outing short tonight, but Young would get away with a bad outing as the team was able to comeback in this game.

Mike Baxter had a two-run homerun in the fourth inning. The next inning David Wright drove in his second run of the game, this time a sacrifice fly that scored Ruben Tejada. That hit from Wright tied the game at that moment, but Chris Young would allow the homerun to Chase Utley the inning after which chased him from the game.

Now with a 5-4 lead the Phillies were poised to get the win, but in the 8th inning Kelly Shoppach was able to drive in a run to tie the game.

Bobby Parnell pitched the ninth inning for the Mets hoping to keep the Phillies off the board. Parnell would get a ground out from Ty Wigginton, a ground out from Jimmy Rollins, and a ground out from Kevin Frandsen to end the inning. That hitless inning would send the Mets and Phillies into extra innings.

In the tenth inning the Mets would get the biggest hit of the night from Ike Davis who delivered a RBI double to give the Mets a 6-5 lead. After the double by Davis, Lucas Duda doubled to center field scoring Davis and giving the Mets a 7-5 lead. Then after back to back doubles, Kelly Shoppach would crush a ball to left field for a two run homerun that left in a hurry. That homerun would give the Mets a 9-5 lead that they would not relinquish.

Bobby Parnell would finish off the game for the Mets after throwing seven pitches in the inning before.

The Mets won a very tough game tonight. After trailing by three runs tonight the Mets were able to comeback to win. They really stepped up tonight and really were able to get clutch hits. Over the last few weeks the Mets have struggled to get clutch hits, but tonight they really went back to their old ways. This series will continue tomorrow night as the Mets look to continue winning.
