Continuing their downward spiral the New York Mets struggled again tonight against the Washington Nationals. This game was very tough on Mets simply from the start they were down and really couldn’t make this a game.
Offensively this team really couldn’t build anything offensively from the start. Scratching out just one run today from the bat of Scott Hairston, the Mets as a team just never could make this a game.
Colin McHugh started for the Mets looking to collect his first major league win. McHugh struggled to limit the long ball as he gave up three homeruns in this game. Lasting just four innings tonight McHugh allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits. McHugh pitches found the middle of the zone and the Nationals took advantage. So far McHugh has shown flashes of dominance, but his last two starts he has struggled with control.
A huge opportunity came for the Mets in the eighth inning when they were able to get the first two men on back to back singles from Daniel Murphy and David Wright. Scott Hairston looked to deliver again, but would strike out. Ike Davis was the next man up and he would hit into an inning ending double play that ended any chance of the Mets making a comeback.
The Mets would lose this game 5-1 in what was a game of missed opportunities. This series will continue tomorrow as the Mets look to even up the series with R.A. Dickey taking the mound.
