An early onslaught by the Knicks, saw the Bobcats comeback late, but the Knicks would hold on for the win.
Leading by 30 points, the Knicks had everything clicking early on. Led by JR Smith, the Knicks really weren’t going to lose this game. His 23 points at halftime were really important in getting the team off to a nice start. Smith would finish with 37 points en-route to his third consecutive game of 30 points or more. This streak of 30 points has really been a great run by Smith. His attacking to the basket has provided a surprising effect for him. His entire game has shifted into another level. That level has Smith saying this is the best basketball of his career. It is also worth noting that Smith only attempted two three-pointers tonight, which is a huge change in his game.
Other then the strong game by Smith, Carmelo Anthony provided some scoring as well. Anthony scored 32 points on 39 percent shooting. He also rebound the ball well as he collected 11 rebounds.
Anthony and Smith became the first two Knicks to score 30 plus points in the same game since March 30, 2011. The last to do that were Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.
Tonight the Bobcats really showed why they have the worst record in the league as they committed 17 turnovers. The Knicks defense really played aggressive and provided excellent traps and deflections. The defense was strong early, but the Bobcats did make a run in the second half as they attacked the Knicks interior defense. That was a real reason they were able to get back into the game.
The Knicks have to be happy with picking up their season best seventh straight win, but also have to be concerned with the struggles in the second half. Tonight the Knicks struggled in the second half for the second game in a row and that has to change down the road.
Overall the Knicks won a game they had to win. They came out strong and finished the game at the free throw line. They have played great basketball over the last seven games. They have to prepare for the Boston Celtics on Sunday night, but overall have some great vibes going.
