This afternoon the New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 11-2. This was a very encouraging win by the Mets today, who led the entire game.
There were many bright spots today, but the performance by Jon Niese was really nice. Niese, who was named the opening day starter a couple of weeks ago, really did an excellent job today. Niese worked 6.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. Niese did allow a homerun, but overall did an excellent job in limiting base runners.
Collin Cowgill had the biggest hit of the game as he hit the first grand slam of his career. Overall Cowgill had a nice day as he went 2 for 4 with two strikeouts. Many didn’t suspect Cowgill being the leadoff hitter, but today Terry Collins placed him in that spot and it paid off.
Newly appointed Mets captain, David Wright played an important role in this one as he went 1 for 4 with two stolen bases and one run scored. Wright also made a spectacular defensive play today as he took a hit away.
Marlon Byrd went 2 for 5 with two RBI hits. Byrd did a great job in getting clutch hits with runners on and was a major influence in getting the Mets off to a great start.
This was a very fun game from the Mets perspective with many positives. The only real disappointment was the performance of Ike Davis, who went 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts. He really wasn’t effective today, but it was only the first game.
The Mets win yet again on opening day and took it to the Padres today. With many positive signs, the team showed that with the lack of power they still could put runs on the board. The Mets will continue their season on Wednesday night when they will continue their series against the Padres.
