The New York Knicks welcomed the San Antonio Spurs to Madison Square Garden. But quickly this game turned ugly as the Spurs would just destroy the Knicks in every possible way. This one was over from the start as the Knicks started slowly yet again. The Spurs would go on to win 120-89.
The Spurs played a nearly perfect game today. They were able to pick apart the Knicks defense with quick and on point passes. Danny Green was the beneficiary of most of the passes and he wouldn’t miss much in this game. Green would score 24 points including six three-pointers. His ability to shoot makes the Spurs one of the dangerous teams in the league. They will always have a great chance when Green is connecting on threes and today he did.
Kawhi Leonard played well and continues to become one of the budding stars in the league. Leonard scored 18 points including stellar defense. He is a player the Spurs can count on every game.
For the Knicks, lackluster defense, poor offense, and terrible rebounding made for a long and pathetic day. They switched way too much on defense causing for easy opportunities for the Spurs. They continue to switch and that continues to destroy them on the defensive end. They didn’t rebound the ball well either, they would lose the rebounding battle 51 to 33. They cannot compete losing on the boards like they did.
Andrea Bargnani had a strong offensive showing for the second consecutive game. Bargnani scored 16 points, but only grabbed one rebound in 26 minutes. Of course he isn’t known for his defense, but as tall as he is, he must rebound. His offense has improved, but in order for the Knicks to have better chances, he has to do better on the other end.
This hasn’t been the best start for the Knicks to start the season and that continued today. Mike Woodson is slowly getting on the hot seat after his teams non-inspiring start. Woodson has tried different lineups, but nothing really has worked. The team just doesn’t seem together and that starts at the coaching position. Expect something to change this week if the team continues to lose games.
The Spurs will move on to face the Philadelphia 76ers tomorrow, while the Knicks get ready for a battle against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. This game went all of San Antonio’s way while the Knicks still wander in what needs to change. The one question remains for the Knicks, what is needed to get this team going?
